Originally, the slit drum (or slit log drum) is a traditional idiophone percussion instrument made by hollowing or carving a block of wood or bamboo to form a resonating chamber with one or more slits on the upper surface. Unlike a traditional drum, it has no membrane; the sound is produced directly by the vibration of the material when struck with a stick or mallet.
