Strymon Olivera – Oil Can Echo
A finely tuned machine for unique vintage delay tones
Step back in time to when audio effects were still unexplored territory, and discover the rich, vintage warble of a true oil can echo.
From dark, modulated repeats to sustained textures reminiscent of classic spring reverb, Olivera is the first pedal to faithfully capture the mechanical yet organic nature of these unusual devices—bringing funky inspiration to any signal you run through it.
The History and Magic of the Oil Can Echo
The first oil can echoes were built by Tel-Rey in 1959, using a rotating disc housed inside a sealed can. A static charge was “written” onto the disc, while oil acted as a lubricating dielectric medium.
This unique design produced a sound distinctly different from traditional tape delays, instantly transporting the listener into a dark, dense atmosphere filled with vibey movement.
The mechanical complexity of these units has made them notoriously difficult to emulate. Strymon developed a brand-new algorithm to faithfully reproduce the dark, modulated repeats, unique decay characteristics, and thick modulation that evolves organically with the incoming signal.
No other type of delay behaves like an oil can—and no emulation comes closer than Olivera.
Vintage Stereo Delay with Modern Features
Olivera combines nostalgic tones with powerful modern functionality:
- Discrete stereo processing for independent left and right inputs
- Streamlined controls with expression pedal and Multiswitch compatibility
- Delay spillover (repeats continue after bypass)
- Discrete Class A JFET stereo preamp for dynamic response and ideal frequency shaping
- Full MIDI control for patch recall and continuous controller data
- Premium components and rugged construction
- USB port for firmware updates and computer control
How It Works
Oil can devices are electromechanical units that write a static charge onto a rotating disc partially immersed in oil. The oil lubricates and preserves the charge, producing a frequency-limited delay signal with a dark, atmospheric character.
Two key characteristics define this type of delay:
Regenerative repeats even without feedback (REGEN) applied.
The static charge has its own decay constant, meaning there is always some echo present.
Irregular echo cadence.
The first repeat follows the distance between the record and playback heads, while subsequent repeats follow the rotation speed of the disc, creating a naturally evolving, atmospheric rhythm.
